Your First Shave: A Beginner's Guide

Technique · June 18, 2026 · 6 min read

Your first shave should be boring. Four items, five minutes, one gentle pass. Everything else you can learn later.

What you need

A razor with a fresh cartridge, shaving cream or gel, warm water, and a light moisturizer. That is the whole list. No aftershave splash needed on day one.

The sequence

Wash with warm water for a minute or two. Lather. Shave downward on the cheeks in short strokes with almost no pressure. On the neck, feel which way the hair grows and follow it. Rinse the razor often.

If you nick yourself

Rinse with cool water and hold light pressure with clean tissue for a minute. It will stop. Nicks come from pressure and awkward angles, not bad luck.

How often at the start

Early growth is fine and patchy — every three or four days is plenty. Shaving more often does not make hair grow thicker; that is a myth. Finish every shave with moisturizer.

The bottom line

Warm water, lather, one light pass with the grain, moisturize. Repeat every few days.
