How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs on Your Legs

An ingrown hair happens when a cut hair grows sideways or back into the skin. The bump is inflammation. Prevention is mostly about how the hair was cut in the first place.
Stop cutting below the surface
Pressing hard, stretching the skin tight and repeatedly re-shaving one patch all cut hair below skin level. That is the setup for an ingrown. Light pressure, flat skin, one pass per area.
Keep the blade sharp
A dull edge tears rather than slices, leaving a ragged tip more likely to catch on the follicle wall on its way out.
Exfoliate and moisturize between shaves
Gentle exfoliation two or three times a week keeps the surface clear so new hair breaks through easily. Daily moisturizer keeps skin supple enough to let it.
If you already have one
Warm compresses, stop shaving that spot for a few days, and do not dig at it with tweezers or a needle. If it becomes painful, pus-filled or keeps recurring, see a dermatologist.
The bottom line
Light pressure, sharp blade, one pass, exfoliate and moisturize between shaves.
