How to Shave Knees and Ankles Without Nicks

Technique · March 6, 2026 · 4 min read

Knees and ankles are curved bone under thin skin. Almost every nick comes from pressing a flat razor head against a convex surface.

Change the shape, not the pressure

Bend the knee fully so the skin stretches flat over the kneecap, then shave across it in short strokes. For ankles, flex the foot and turn the leg so the bone faces you directly.

Short strokes, let the head pivot

Half-inch strokes. If the head has a pivot, let it follow the curve rather than forcing full contact by pushing down.

Sharp blade, extra lather

These spots are the first to complain about a dull cartridge. Re-lather before you tackle them, and never shave the knee dry at the end of a shower as an afterthought.

If you nick

Cool water and light pressure with clean tissue for a minute. Do not shave that spot again until it has closed.

The bottom line

Bend, flex and flatten the skin, use short strokes, re-lather, and never press.
