Shaving Before the Beach or a Spray Tan: Timing Matters
Technique · May 15, 2026 · 4 min read
Freshly shaved skin is briefly more reactive. Salt water, chlorine, sand, sunscreen and tanning solution all land harder in the first few hours.
Spray tan: shave 24 hours before
Shaving the day before lets the skin settle and the follicles close, which gives a more even result. Shaving immediately before often leads to patchiness and stinging.
Beach or pool: give it a few hours
Shave the night before if you can. Salt, chlorine and sand on newly shaved legs and bikini line is the classic recipe for next-day bumps.
Sunscreen still applies
Freshly shaved skin burns just as easily as any other and feels the sting more. Apply sunscreen generously regardless of when you shaved.
The bottom line
Shave the night before, or 24 hours ahead of a spray tan. Never right before sun, salt or solution.
