Should You Exfoliate Before Shaving?

Skin · February 20, 2026 · 5 min read

Before, not after. Exfoliating clears dead skin so the blade contacts hair directly, and it helps trapped hairs surface instead of curling inward.

Why before works better

A layer of dead skin lifts the razor head slightly off the hair, which is why you get a close shave in some spots and stubble in others. Clearing it first evens out the result.

How often

Two or three times a week. Daily scrubbing strips the barrier and causes exactly the redness you were trying to avoid. Skip exfoliation immediately after shaving.

Physical vs chemical

A soft mitt or gentle sugar scrub is fine for most people. For persistent bumps, a mild chemical exfoliant used on non-shave days is often gentler than scrubbing. Introduce one product at a time.

The bottom line

Exfoliate gently before shaving, two or three times a week, never right after.

Fresh blades in 6, 12, 18 and 24 packs. Pause, skip or cancel online at any time.
