Cartridge vs Safety Razor: An Honest Comparison
Razor guides · March 26, 2026 · 6 min read
Safety razors have real advantages and a real learning curve. Cartridges trade some cost efficiency for speed and forgiveness. Neither is objectively better — they suit different mornings.
Learning curve
A safety razor requires you to control the blade angle yourself, usually around 30 degrees, with no pivot to help. Expect a few weeks of nicks. A cartridge's pivoting head does that work for you from day one.
Cost and convenience
Single blades are cheaper per unit, but you buy the technique with time. Cartridges cost more per head and are far faster to use, especially on a loose neck or a curved scalp.
Buying cartridge refills in 12 to 24 packs narrows the price gap considerably.
Irritation and ingrowns
Single-blade advocates argue one edge means one cut per hair and fewer ingrowns. That holds if your technique is good. With poor technique a safety razor causes more irritation than a cartridge, not less.
Travel
Loose double-edge blades are restricted in carry-on baggage in the United States; cartridges generally are not. If you fly often, that alone settles it.
The bottom line
Want ritual and lowest per-blade cost: safety razor. Want speed, forgiveness and easy travel: cartridge.
