How to Line Up Your Beard at Home

Technique · April 9, 2026 · 6 min read

A sharp line-up does more for how a beard reads than an extra week of growth. The trick is deciding where the line goes before you cut, because you cannot put hair back.

Find the neckline first

Put two fingers above your Adam's apple and imagine a curve from behind one ear, down through that point, and back up to the other ear. Everything below is neck and gets shaved clean. Going higher than that makes a beard look thin.

Cheek lines: follow, do not invent

Find your natural cheek line and clean up the strays above it rather than carving a dramatic new angle. A straight line from the sideburn to the corner of the mustache is the safe default.

Work symmetrically and in small increments

Alternate sides, a stroke or two at a time, checking in the mirror straight-on rather than at an angle. Small corrections with a fresh blade beat one confident sweep.

Finish and maintain

Rinse cool, moisturize the shaved skin, and touch up every three or four days. A line-up is maintenance, not a one-time event.

The bottom line

Two fingers above the Adam's apple, follow your natural cheek line, alternate sides, and touch up twice a week.
