How to Shave Your Chest, Back and Body Safely
Technique · May 21, 2026 · 6 min read
Body hair is usually longer and grows in more directions than beard hair, and the skin underneath is thinner in places. The plan is the same as the face with one extra step: trim before you shave.
Trim first, always
Take chest, stomach and shoulders down to short stubble with a body trimmer before any blade. Skipping this clogs the head immediately and pulls hair painfully.
Map the growth direction per zone
Chest hair often grows inward toward the sternum, and stomach hair grows upward or in a swirl. Work with each zone's direction rather than one sweep top to bottom.
Manage regrowth itch
Itch comes from blunt-cut hair tips pushing against skin. Shave with the grain, moisturize daily, and exfoliate gently a couple of times a week during regrowth.
Know your limits
Backs and shoulders are hard to shave safely alone; a long-handled tool, a trimmer, or a professional is the better answer. Around the groin, trim short, go slow, and hold the skin flat rather than stretched.
The bottom line
Trim, map each zone's grain, shave with it, moisturize daily through regrowth.
