How to Shave Your Head Smooth Without Nicks
Technique · February 12, 2026 · 7 min read
A shaved head is a bigger surface than a face, with bone ridges, a crown that swirls, and a section you cannot see. Treat it as its own routine and it becomes a five-minute job.
Clipper down first, always
Take the hair to stubble with a clipper and no guard before a blade ever touches your scalp. Skipping this step is how you clog a cartridge in three strokes and end up yanking.
Work the scalp in four sections
Divide the head into front, two sides and back. Lather one section at a time so it never dries out. Use your free hand to feel for missed patches — your fingertips are more reliable than a mirror on a curved surface.
The crown grows in a spiral. Shave it in short strokes from several directions rather than one long sweep.
Protect the danger zones
Ears, the bony ridge behind them, and the base of the skull are where nicks happen. Fold the ear forward with one hand and go slowly. On the back of the neck, follow the hairline shape you want rather than shaving blindly upward.
Aftercare and sun
A freshly shaved scalp is exfoliated skin with no hair cover. Use a light moisturizer, and use sunscreen before you go outside. Scalp sunburn on shave day is both painful and avoidable.
The bottom line
Clipper first, lather in sections, feel with your hand, slow down at the ears, and moisturize plus sunscreen after.
