Winter Shaving: How to Beat Dry, Flaky Skin
Skin · May 14, 2026 · 5 min read
Nothing about your razor changed in January. The air did. Low humidity outside plus forced-air heat inside pulls water out of the outer skin layer, and a blade on dehydrated skin stings.
Hydrate longer, shave less often
Extend the warm-water prep and consider dropping from daily to every other day through the coldest weeks. Fewer shaves means fewer barrier insults.
Switch your products for the season
Move from a thin gel to a richer cream, and from an alcohol splash to a proper balm or moisturizer. Apply while the skin is still slightly damp so you seal water in.
Fix the room, not just the face
A humidifier in the bedroom changes morning skin more than any product. Also turn the shower temperature down — very hot water strips more oil than warm water.
The bottom line
Richer cream, a real moisturizer on damp skin, shorter cooler showers, and a humidifier if the air is very dry.
