Shaving With or Against the Grain: What to Do and When

Technique · March 5, 2026 · 5 min read

With the grain is comfortable. Against the grain is close. The skill is knowing where on your face you can afford each one.

How to map your grain in 30 seconds

Let a day of stubble grow. Run the back of your fingers across each area. Smooth means you are moving with the grain; rough means against. Your cheeks, jaw and neck will often disagree with each other.

The two-pass plan

Pass one: with the grain, everywhere, full lather. Re-lather. Pass two: across the grain on the cheeks and jaw. Leave the neck at one pass if it tends to bump.

When against the grain is a bad idea

Coarse or curly hair, an active breakout, sunburn, or a blade older than five shaves. In all four cases the extra closeness costs more than it is worth.

The bottom line

First pass with the grain, second across. Save against-the-grain for sparse, straight hair and a brand-new blade.

Fresh blades in 6, 12, 18 and 24 packs. Pause, skip or cancel online at any time.
