Should You Shave Before or After a Shower?

After. Almost always after. Warm water and steam soften the hair and open the follicle, which means less force per stroke and less irritation afterwards.
What the shower actually does
Two to three minutes of warm water swells the hair shaft so the edge slices instead of tearing. It also washes away oil and dead skin that would otherwise clog the razor head.
The five-minute version
No time for a shower? Soak a washcloth in hot water and hold it against your face for a minute, then lather. It is not identical, but it gets you most of the benefit.
When shaving before makes sense
If you are prone to clogged pores or you use a heavy pre-shave oil, shaving first and rinsing in the shower can suit you better. This is a minority case — test it on a weekend, not before work.
The bottom line
Shave after a warm shower. If you cannot, use a hot towel for a minute first.
